“O.G.” is a story filmed and set in an Indiana prison called Pendleton Correctional Facility. Inmate Louis, played by Jeffrey Wright, is the O.G. due to get out but must contend with prison politics that threaten his freedom and very life. In this case an O.G. translates to Original Gangster meaning a veteran prisoner, someone who earned their spurs in the justice system. Things do not look good for Louis but he navigates his hostile environment with remarkable grace and skill while keeping his humanity.

What are some of the prison politics Louis must deal with? Well firstly he must repel the badgering of the warden Danvers, played by William Fichtner. Danvers wants info from him not caring what will happen to Louis if he does become a snitch. He faces blackmail from Danvers but is respected, and it is that respect that I feel eventually keeps him alive. He must also keep the younger inmate gangs from hassling him or shaking him down. Add the fact that Louis is trying to save the life of a young inmate Beecher, played by Theothus Carter, who is facing the pressures of his gang and the prison system.

This is not a happy movie but it´s hopeful and it takes us into the world of the justice system with realism. It doesn´t use shock and violence to keep us in our seats. It´s a good story. Louis may have committed serious crimes but with the passing years he has grown wiser and we the viewer wish him the best as he tackles his endeavours.

Addendum:
There´s an interesting New Yorker article written by Nick Paumgarten about some of the facts behind the film. I highly suggest reading it.

This is a very well done film and I cannot recommend it enough. I´m glad to see Jeffrey Wright get good film roles and take those roles. He is a great talent who lifts the script up off the screen and gives it life. The whole cast did a fantastic job.

So go check out “O.G.” because it´s worth it.
