“Alphonse” is the story of a lonely man named Alphonse, played by Jean Dujardin, who is married to a controlling woman named Margot, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg. His marriage is a miserable one and as a result he is a lonely man. He is someone who never got to know his mother, played by Laura Morante, and had a troubled relationship with his father, played by Pierre Arditi. His mother disappeared out of his life when he was a child while his father was out if the house. She left behind a note when she left the family but things aren’t what they seem. Throughout the story Alphonse has a longing to find out more about his mother and eventually find her and have that long conversation about the past.

Alphonse’s father is a male prostitute who has spent his life after his wife, Laura, left chasing money from the women he was selling himself to. His relationships are mostly business transactions and that is a sad fact. He pulls his son into his lifestyle but Alphonse has some good motivations guiding him in life. He cares about people more than his father does and he does care about his wife even though she is a controlling, nasty, bully. Not only does Alphonse become a male prostitute from the goading of his father but he actually tries to salvage the relationship with his wife and he understands that relationships are more important than money. Sadly, it seems that the father has given up on relationships and chooses to prioritize money over them.

All of the characters share their own particular form of loneliness. I feel that this is the story of people and their loneliness and how they deal with it and in some cases solve it by improving the relationships in their lives.

One interesting question I have for the story is whether or to which degree does money play the role of catalyst in Alphonse’s life? Was he somehow pushed into this lifestyle like a human trafficking situation? The answer I think is that this is not a case of human trafficking but money is a catalyst. It is a small catalyst because I want to think that he had other options for employment and earning a living. He chose that lifestyle because he was somehow drawn to it.

The talent is just spectacular. Jean Dujardin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Pierre Arditi and the other people working on this project did such a good job. If you are a fan of any of these people then you will not be disappointed. They did a great job. Also, the writing is really good. What a great screenplay. So, check out this series because it’s so well done.
