There are so many stories about advances made in the realm of plastic surgery. Some even say that plastic surgery and fashion are in the process of fusing like never before. The truth is that plastic surgery has been around for a very long time. It was much less invasive in the past than today but it has existed for much of human history. And believe it or not there are instances in the past where doctors have performed amazing operations with the most primitive technologies. Take for example the operation King Henry V received when he took an arrow to his head. His surgeon created the tools he used to extract the arrow from his brain and did no less than save his life. It was brilliant medicine planned and performed by a brilliant man named John Bradmore. There is a documentary on it and it is excellent.

In the realm of cosmetic surgeries it is safe to say that today is really the best time to be alive. I believe in plastic surgery for those wo want it and if done in moderation. So many people get plastic surgeries nowadays. They touch up their faces, remove flapping skin, make their lips and noses fuller and for the most part the results are a nice touch. However, some people can take plastic surgery to extremes the way some people who start with one small tattoo and then end up covering their bodies with them or people who collect expensive watches to the point of going bankrupt. The fact is that even plastic surgery taken to extremes can stop a being positive thing.

There is one trend that really caught my attention in the realm of plastic surgery. I’ve heard of people wanting to resemble aliens, lizards and dolls but for the first time ever someone told me of a growing trend of people who want to resemble robots. Yes. Robots. There is a growing trend of people who get surgery after surgery to attain the look of a robot. I assume that these people are also hoping for the soon approaching day when implants will become a part of everyday life too. I haven’t heard of a name for this trend but it exists. How far will this trend go? Will it last beyond the point of when robots are commonplace in society? You know when they are walking, floating or rolling around?

Another interesting trend that could emerge from this would be the people who get the most extreme plastic surgeries to look like robots and who want society to acknowledge them as such. Maybe with a new pronoun and tax bracket. And I don’t say this mockingly either. The plastic surgery could get so good that the line between real robots and people identifying themselves as such could become blurred by cultural definition and societal norms. This sounds like quite the cultural change.

Maybe one of the results of this cultural shift would be that the word “it” to describe a person would no longer be badly viewed. Either way, here at the end of 2023, from this vantage point, we can wait and see where this trend leads and the changes that come about from it. We truly live in interesting times.
