“The Good Place” is an American, fantasy, comedy, TV series produced by a talented bunch that includes David Hyman, Megan Amram, Drew Goddard, Joe Mande, David Miner, Dylan Morgan, Morgan Sackett and Michael Schur, who also contributed as a writer and director. It was also directed by a group of talented people which includes Dean Holland, Beth McCarthy-Miller, Drew Goddard, Jude Wang and Trent O`Donnell. It stars a huge cast of talented people that includes Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D`Arcy Carden, Manny Jacinto, Ted Danson, Marc Evan Jackson, Tiya Sicar, Josh Siegal, Maya Rudolph, Bambadjan Bamba, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Jama Williamson, Jason Mantzoukas, Stee Berg, Maribeth Monroe, Adam Scott, Eugene Cordero, Luke Guldan, Amy Okuda.
“The Good Place” is an interesting and entertaining look at the afterlife for one morally dubious , but likable, woman named Eleanor Shellstrop, played by Kristen Bell. Initially, it looks like Eleanor is stuck in a good place where she does not belong but things take an interesting twist and nothing is as it appears. As the story develops we get a good chance to learn what kind of person Eleanor is and, to put it mildly, she is no angel. On the contrary, she is a rascal. Eleanor is a really shady person. But I have to say that this TV series had me rolling. To watch her wiggle and squirm out of the problems she creates for herself is just too funny. Her distrust for people and groups is another part of her personality that gets her into trouble.
In the story Eleanor dies and passes on to an area called The Good Place which is implied to be heaven but isn`t quite that. Everything seems perfect and everyone is respectful and seemingly happy but she she knows that she does not belong there. The architect and manager of this Good Place is Michael, played by Ted Danson. From the start we get the impression that something is wrong with Michael and the Good Place. He doesn`t seem to know how to run things and his explanations for things come across as excuses for major his foibles. Crisis after crisis confirms this until a crescendo of crises reveal a disturbing truth about The Good Place.
“The Good Place” is a fun watch that hearkens back to the days when TV was harmless entertainment that gave the viewer a good belly laugh and little more. There is no extreme violence or cruelty and the people in the Good Place are just dopey. They are essentially flawed and not so likable when on their own until they come together and become more than just individual rejects. This series is really a fun watch.
