“Amsterdam” is a historical fiction, comedy, thriller, presidential conspiracy film produced by Christian Bale, Matthew Budman, Drake, Sam Hanson, Anthony Katagas, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, Adel Future Nur, Daivd O. Russell and Michael Schaefer. It was written and directed by David O. Russell and stars a large cast which includes Chrisitian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Alessandro Nivola, Andrea Riseborough, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, Taylor Swift, Timothy Olyphant, Zoe Saldana, Rami Malek, Robert De Niro, Mel Fair, Vaughn Page, Bonnie Hellman, Max Perlich, Jessica Drake, Ed Begley Jr., Colleen Camp, Gabe Doppelt, Lauren Shaw, Mark Winn and many others.
“Amsterdam” is a work of historical fiction with people that problably never existed in a time when the West was at war. The story spans many years beginning around the time of WWI. The main character of the story is a Burt Berendsen, played by Christian Bale. Burt is sent to war by his wife’s family, in hopes of killing him. But what does not kill him makes him stronger in his case. He is madly in love with Beatrice Vandenheuvel, played by Andrea Riseborough. She is a wealthy women who comes from a wealthy wasp family who only cares about money and status but he loves her for her and nothing else. Beatrice’s family looks down on Burt and everyone else who is not a wealthy wasp and it takes the entire course of the movie for Burt to see her for who she truly is. The whole story centers around this one sided relationship. He goes to war makes some very good friends and that is a good description of his life.
This might be a bit of a spoiler but in the beginning of the film we really think of him as lousy doctor, flim-flam artist and snake oil salesman. As the story develops we see that this is not an accurate description of him at all because he is a very good doctor and more of a seeker of medical cures with what was the best technology and knowledge of the day. Burt’s dilemma is that he is in love with the wrong woman and all the things he does for her lead him down the path of adventure and danger. But he comes out better and wiser for it. And that is the honest truth about Burt. As the story develops you will get a better understanding of what motivates him and you will realize just how courageous and genuine a person he really is. Burt really is out to help veterans who desperately need it.
Burt’s character arc is really a wonderful journey and the group of people he pulls into his life are very likable misfits who are just as genuine and courageous as him. The saying that birds of a feather flock together really applies to a person like Burt and I think that it is only at the end of the movie that we realize what a great gift such a truism is for him.
This is the story of relationships, friendships and otherwise, that transcend class systems, caste systems and even the changing times. These flawed people focus on the people in their lives and grow because of it. And I do believe that the fact that they are misfits not only makes them more endearing to the viewer but adds to their character.
This movie is an incredible gem and I can see why so much great talent wanted to be a part of it. The growth of the characters, the quirkiness if the story is wonderful. This is a wonderful story. I highly recommend “Amsterdam”. It’s fantastic.
