A New Metric For A New Watch

The smooth running of our lives are so dependent on so many seemingly small things we take for granted. This is more and more the case as our lives become more dependent on emerging technologies. So many more parts of our lives will become relegated to those technologies. Soon we will have cars that drive themselves so we can occupy our time with more important things, but that´s just one example.

My point is that maybe things are changing so fast that we also need to change some of the smaller parts that make our lives run so smoothly. Maybe we need to change the way we learn and what we learn. It´s no secret that the academic world in the West needs some serious changes. It really is a dinosaur among skyscrapers. So what am I talking about?

I don´t mean to get too scifi on you but what I´m talking about are the units of measurement we use. More precisely units of time. We have been using the seconds, minutes and hours time scale for the longest but how about finding a scale that is more flexible, like a kind of logarithmic one. I am talking about a scale that takes into account the groups of peoples and societies in far off places as well as those travelling those long distances. We could develop such a definition of time now and refine it over the decades so it will be near perfect when we need it.

I believe that we will one day need such measurements for time and that could be sooner than we think. So think of a slightly more complex definition of time that no longer is just variables like minutes, seconds and hours but is more of a formula. Imagine the measurement of time being more an algorithm than a simple number. This would require a new kind of watch but then again I always felt that watches and clocks are as integral to modern cultures as sofas and coffee and should never go out of style. I´m looking forward to wearing that new wristwatch.

So ponder that thought. I hope that you enjoyed my ramblings.
