“Haven” is an supernatural, mystery, horror, drama, scifi TV series that is a Canadian and American collaboration. It stars a gigantic team of talent which includes producers Charles Ardai, Stefani N. Deoul, Adam Fratto, Ginny Jones-Duzak, David MacLeod, John Morayniss, Shawn Piller, Lloyd Segan, Scott Shepherd, Matt McGuinness, Gabrielle G. Stanton, Jim Dunn, Sam Ernst, Tashi Bieler, Margaret O’Brien, Speed Weed, Noreen Halpern and many more. The list of directors is even longer than that of producers with names likeShawn Piller, T.W. Peacocke, Lee Rose, Rick Bota, Tim Southam, Stephen Reynolds, Paul Fox. The cast of writers i huge and actor include the likes of such talented individuals as Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour, Richard Donat, John Dunsworth, Adam Copeland, Glenn Lefchak, Jayne Eastwood, Nicholas Campbell, Kate Kelton, Laura Mennell, Emma Lahana, Bree Williamson, Molly Dunsworth, Kirsty Hinchcliffe, Colin Ferguson, Maurice Dean Wint, Christopher Shore, Stephen McHattie, Vinessa Antoine, Mary-Colin Chisholm, Dorian Missick, Christian Camargo, Jay Reso, Kris Lemche, Jason Priestley, Steve Lund, Robert Maillet, Bernard Robichaud, Kyle Mitchell, Michelle Monteith, William Shatner, Kathleen Munroe, Tamara Duarte, Anne Caillon, Jennie Raymond, Paul Braunstein, Rossif Sutherland, Nicole de Boer, Gabrielle Trudel and so many more. In all honesty this series has the largest cast of talent I have seen on a film or TV series. It is gigantic.
“Haven: Tuwiuwok” is the story of a strange, quaint New England town in Haven, Maine where many strange goings-on happen, things that defy simple explanations at first. The town is named ‘Tuwiuwok’ after a Migmaw word meaning ‘haven’ or more precisely ‘haven for the gods’ (pronounced Mik’ maq. The Migmaw are a First Nations People who have inhabited the regions from New England up to Canada for over 10,00 years) . In my opinion, the name of the town could imply a meaning like ‘A place for people with special talents’.
The story is about an FBI agent named Audrey Parker, played by Emily Rose, who investigates the strange crime cases of Haven, Maine and who is also trying to discover her mysterious link to the place. She is somehow a piece of the puzzle of this town called ‘Haven’. In this town, you have people who start storms, rot food at will when they get angry and all other kinds of strange abilities that somehow coincide with their life stories, or more precisely things in their lives that they have to fix. Add to this is Audrey’s strange history with Haven that she gradually uncovers and you have a strange quirky TV series.
There are many charming elements that make up this story. For starters is the fact that it’s a quaint New England town complete with its fishing boats, lobster traps and clam cake joints. For anyone who enjoys New England culture you’re going to find this story a real treat. Another element in the background is the subtle and ever present culture and influence of the First Nations People that preceded the present culture. It comes through in town signs and stories from days past that haunt the world today. I love the layering of culture and cultural influences in a story. One great example of this in the real world today is the area called Siem Reap in Cambodia at the world’s largest religious monument, temple of Ankgor Wat with its Hindu and Buddhist influences layered on top of each other.
The main character of Audrey is another great story element to note. She really manages well in this new environment that is strange and somehow a part of her. She has great detective/ police skills. Sherlock Holmes would be proud. She often figures things out before her peers and even us, the audience, do. A detective story were the lead detective is ahead of everyone else makes for a great ride of a story. When the lead detective reaches their conclusion as to what went on in a case wile the rest of us are swimming in ignorance is a real treat. It’s a ‘wow moment’. Everybody loves a ‘wow moment’.
Another great story element that I loved was how you have a people with strange powers that are mysteriously linked to problems they have to solve in their lives. They are not to beating up some bad guys. It isn’t some silly superhero story. People in this story are, for the most part, likeable.
This is a good watch because it’s not the usual TV production. It’s strange and full of mostly well intentioned people who have abilities out of the ordinary and live in a town where they can live mostly normal lives with those abilities, that is until they go a little crazy. This is good television.
So, check out the TV series “Haven” for a good binge.
