“The Italian Job” is an American action, heist film produced by Donald De Line and directed by F. Gary Gray.  It is based on the book of the same name written by Troy Kennedy Martin. It is a remake of the 1969 film. The screenplay was written by Troy Kennedy Martin, Donna Powers and Wayne Powers. It stars a very talented cast which include Donald Sutherland, Jason Statham, Seth Green, Yasiin Bey, Edward Norton, Fausto Callegarini, Fabio Scarpa, Stefano Petronelli, Jimmy Shubert, Tammi Cubilette, Mary Portser, Shawn Fanning, Oscar Nunez, Franky G, Gloria Obrien, Frank Nyi, Martin Morales, Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg.

“The Italian Job” is the story of a group of robbers who plan one last heist. I hesitate to use the word criminal to describe this group because they are so likeable, but truth be told they are on the wrong side of the law. John Bridger, played by Donald Sutherland, is a veteran thief who assembles a team of thieves to pull off a very big heist. His point man is Charlie Croker who is an item with John Bridger´s daughter Stella. Well, as the story progresses the team encounter unforeseen problems and a betrayal that threaten the loot and their lives.

I liked the character dynamics of this story. In spite of the fact Bridge´s team were criminals they worked well together. Most of them at least. They are talented and you really got the impression they were working for a corporation. They reminded me of your everyday coworker which was funny in and of itself. Now in true Hollywood fashion character design they all had their own different personalities and vices but in this case it worked. It wasn´t so contrived as in most Hollywood films of this kind. The action was fun and the scenery was beautiful. Shooting a film in Venice, Italy is always great eye candy and a good idea.

Now this is an action film with a story that is a little oversimplified but it works. You have to suspend your disbelief just a little to enjoy this film. This is a simple and fun film to watch shot at beautiful locations with funny old school references like that of Napster. So ignore the lack of FBI or Interpol presence. Ignore the fact that these characters live in a world without the IRS and enjoy the watch.
