“The Hobbit” is a fantasy masterpiece and the prelude book to a very famous fantasy trilogy called The Lord Of The Rings. It is enjoyed by children and adults alike. Several very good cartoons and movies have been including the 2012 version which was divided into 2 movies (The Hobbit film blog). It is hard to believe that it was published in 1937 and remains the standard for fantasy books today. It has received good reviews from its first publication even though it is a fantasy book. A collectors market has sprung up around the books and the world J.R.R. Tolkien has created. It has been translated into many languages along with the cartoons and films. The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings is the most well known fantasy book series in the West and probably the world.

The story is the tale of an unassuming, reluctant hero named Bilbo Baggins. He has a comfortable life in the cozy community known as the Shire. He is a hobbit. They are small, charming people who enjoy family, good food and a life without courageous deeds. Their love of what is safe and quaint borders on cowardice but the community they live in is a cozy one.

This is such a fun read that takes place in such a strange world of giant spiders, wizards, trolls and magic. You have the wizard Gandalf who fights on the side of good and is a big help. The aging dragon Smaug is an impressive adversary and the exchange between Bilbo and Smaug is one of the best dialogues in the fantasy book genre I have ever read. And of course you have the character of the Gollum, a tragic figure ever present in the background.

“The Hobbit”is my favorite of the whole series because of its simple prose, likable characters and originality of story. I cannot recommend “The Hobbit” enough. It is a fun read that is so worth it.
