“The Cleaner” is a unique kind of comedy with a very sinister edge. It’s one of those guilty comedies to enjoy where you laugh at things you know you should not be laughing at. The story is about protagonist Paul “Wicky” Wickstead, played by Greg Davies. He is a government certified cleaning technician. That means he cleans up crime scenes or places where people have died. So blood, body parts, I’m assuming odors too, he cleans up. Yes. It is a gruesome profession but his easy going nature and a twisted sense of humor will give you guilty chuckles. Each episode has Wicky cleaning up a crime scene or death scene and where he meets the everyday person who turns out to be much stranger and in most cases more likeable than you might assume. This is the story of a man doing his job, albeit a gruesome one, day in and day out and the things that happen over the course of his days at work. I never really that about how crime scenes or death scenes are cleaned up until I watched this series. It really has you wonder about all those jobs that exist that you never thought about.

This is a series that explores the twisted side of human nature without the cruelty or sadism and so it’s actually a pleasure to watch. Wicky is also a kind of big boob. He is likable and understands that he should not think too much about the actions that led to the scenes he has to clean up. And of course his sense of humor is just so British. It amazes how the Brits can joke about absolutely anything… but football. That is really the only topic that I can think of that is off limits and this series confirms that. Think of the Angel of Death with a likable demeanor, compassionate heart and twisted sense of humor and you have Wicky.

The story is simple but it works. Wicky is a simple guy who eats simple sandwiches for lunch. He’s not in incredible physical shape or a master swordsman or even tech wiz. Wicky is the everyday person doing an unusual job and doing it well. It draws you in and will have you laugh while you’re shaking your head in disapproval.

I wonder how would such a job effect me if I were doing it? That is one of the questions you might find yourself wondering about. Either way Check out “The Cleaner” it’s a good laugh that will also warm your heart.
