“Sinners” is a story with so much symbolism and metaphors and foreshadowing in a great story, it really is THE treat of the year for storytellers. The story is set in a 1932, post WWI, African American community in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The main characters are the Moore twins Stack and Smoke, both played by Michael B. Jordan and their cousin Sammie Moore, played by Miles Canton. (I have to say what a great performance Miles Canton gives as Sammie too). The Moore twins are war veterans of WWI and come home to start a juke joint for the community.
Now, one interesting and funny detail of the story is that the Moore twins made their money working for gangsters in Chicago, probably bootlegging because this was during the time of Prohibition, and that they probably stole money from a Al Capone himself. Yes the Al Capone. Stealing from the top gangster in American culture, now that’s gangster. The rappers of today have got nothing on the Moore twins.
Sammie ‘Preacher Boy’ Moore jumps at the chance to join the Moore twins and play blues music on his guitar at the newly opened Juke Box. Just for symbolisms sake the color of the sign is red because that is the only color paint available. Also, as a side note, the colors red and blue are seen everywhere and you could say it symbolizes the brothers who are dressed in red and blue. Red and blue also are the colors of the flag, our political parties. These colors do not work against each other but complement each other, work with each other like the twins. That is a much needed theme we need to see more of in our day to day lives. So, in my opinion, the red and blue colors symbolize a difference of opinion, perspective that work successfully together. What great symbolism.
My favorite scene was when they went through the different cultures that influenced the blues on the dance floor. The dances, costumes were beautiful. What a great scene. That scene really epitomizes the cultural impact of the place called, The Juke. It was a place where people come together after a long week’s work. It’s a place where they can socialize, drink, dance and laugh. It’s in places like this that new art forms, music and dialects emerge. People share their experiences, stories and who they are in places like these. As an example, music like the Blues and Jazz were born in places like these. Also, some great stories have come out of places like these. Places like these feed all the art forms.
I loved the character of Delta Slim, played by the great Delroy Lindon, who was the old piano player and local blues legend. For those living under a rock Delroy Lindon is acting royalty. He has been in so many great films and great productions he is thespian royalty. So, he definitely deserves a shout out.
This story is also a very positive look at a community working toward the American dream.
This is a great film. So, check it out.
