“Pitch Black” is an American/Australian sci-fi/action/thriller classic produced by Tom Engelman and directed by David Twohy. It is the first film of a trilogy. The screenplay was written by Jim Wheat, Ken Wheat and David Ywohy. It boasts a very talented cast of actors Radha Mitchell, Vin Diesel, Claudia Black, Cole Hauser, Keith David, Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Rhiana Griffith, John Moore, Simon Burke, Les Chantery, Sam Sari, Vic Wilson and Firass Dirani. It was nominated for the Saturn award in 2000 as well as the Bram Stoker Award, Blockbuster Entertainment Award and the International Horror Guild Award, all in 2001. It won two Australian Cinematographers Society Awards in 2001. This film is a masterpiece.
The story begins when a ship traveling through space is hit by a meteor storm and the ship´s captain is killed. The ship is forced down onto a hot, dry planet with three suns. Among the crew of 12 is a prisoner named Richard B. Riddick (played by Vin Diesel). Riddick is a hardened prisoner with a very keen sense for survival. His preternatural survival instincts keep him alive and in many cases allow him to think several steps ahead in most hard situations. So while everyone is panicking or clueless he is calm. This is impressive in a protagonist and translates well onscreen. Riddick is fearless.
When we get to see the deep doodoo the crew is in, the hairs on the back of our collective necks just stand up. The crew is up the proverbial creek without a paddle. Things just look hopeless. This is the story of a man who navigates a dangerous situation by his wits. He´s a hardened and capable protaginist. I also liked the pace of the film.
“Pitch Black” is one of the most original sci-fi movies made. It takes the common storyline of castaways trying to get off a hostile planet and puts an entirely new twist to it. The world building is so well done, original and yet simple. It´s also a beautifully shot film with a captivating story. This is a movie has combined a great script, great world-building to great actors. That is why “Pitch Black” is a must see and own.
