“North Of North” is the story of Siaja, played by Anna Lambe, a young Inuk who lives in a fictional northern Canadian Inuk community named Ice Cove in Nunavut. Siaja decides to take control of her life in a community that wants otherwise. This means divorcing her golden boy, prize of the town, self absorbed husband and going to work. Some people move to reinvent themselves but Siaja stays put. She takes a job working for the town under a Euro woman named Helen, brilliantly played by Mary Lynn Rajskub, who sets out firing people left and right as a show of leadership. This show really got the aspects of cultural differences spot on. Siaja has to prove herself to a boss that is really not very good at her job and has an unhealthy distance from the very people she lives with. I cannot say enough times how well this script is written. This is a great comedy. One of the elements that makes this a great series is how it does not try to be something it is not. There are no protagonist exaggerated situations, Siaja does not beat up a crowd of men or slap ghouls around, or overly dramatic scenes. We see scene after scene of her putting the community’s expectations over herself, and of course there are inconvenient gender roles she is expected to fulfill but she handles them with well and is growing as a person.
One story element that works well and that I love to see is that of the productive member of a community trying to navigate the mine fields of people’s expectations. Siaja does this so well and, like I said she is growing. So, the development of the story has the feel of someone wiggling out of an old suit, shedding outdated ways of doing things, and bringing her community into a more modern age. She, essentially is a leader but not in title. At least not yet. That is such a powerful story element that hooks me every time and if you add a great script to it, like what is done here, well then, you create magic.
This is a funny show that will have you fart and laugh at the same time. The husband is such a brilliant caricature he’s too funny to watch. And to see the whole town just faun over him and always expect success from him and give him what he wants is hilariously ridiculous. What a boob.
In this age of wider and wider entertainment selections it’s nice to know that there are many well made series made today. And to have it be comedy is a double plus because good comedy seems like a harder and harder feat to achieve in this day and age, for some reason. go figure.
Either way check out “North Of North” it’s a gem for sure. And it’s appropriate for all groups of people.
