“I’m Your Woman” is set in the 1970s the story of a woman, a housewife raising a child named Jean, played by Rachel Brosnahan, who forced to go on the run after her husband Eddie, played by Bill Heck, betrays his partners in crime. Eddie seemed to have been involved in all kinds of shady businesses and crimes ranging from theft, murder and the list probably goes on. As it turns out and to no one’s surprise he is not the best husband either. It is important to note that Jean is a good wife and mother to their adopted son but she is also not inquisitive enough about the shady things going on around her and at the beginning of the story she seems entirely too dependent on Eddie. There is a dialogue Jean has where she describes how Jean and Eddie acquired their son and it is very revealing about her.

The character development and growth of Jean are what make this such a good film. Of course the action and unraveling of the mystery that is Eddie and his criminal dealings and where he was located and what happened to him make this a great film, (although we eventually learn that Jean figures out what happened to him). But what makes this film a gem is the growth of Jean. During the story we see Jean go from being someone who goes through life as a spectator to someone who reaches out more and is forced to take control of her life. She is also someone ready to start over after finding out the truth about Eddie. Stories where the hero gets up, so to speak, are often excellent ones. Jean’s character arc is wonderful.

I also liked the way Jean’s husband Eddie, played by Bill Heck, was in the background for just about the whole story. He is a mysterious and shady person who exerts influence on Jean’s life and we, the viewer, are glad to see her move on from him. He is a liar, thief, murderer, among other misdeeds, who cheated some fellow criminals and had to send his wife, Jean, on the run. I believe that Eddie loves Jean but is a bad influence on her. She really is living her life in a box when he is with him and that’s not pretty to see. In some ways you can say that Eddie is the villain of the story because he keeps the main character, Jean, from developing.

I liked the time period piece also. They did a great job taking us to the 1970s America. This is a time before modern technology like smart phones, personal computers, tablets, phone apps, internet. Cars were made of steel back then, not polymers. They were bigger and built like tanks. The fashion was also different. Everybody knows about the fashion from the 1970s and they did a great job with that. The world building was really good.

It is also important to say that Rachel Brosnahan not only played the role of Jean to a T but she also one of the producers of the film. Besides other acting jobs she has done musicals and TV.

So check out “I’m Your Woman” and enjoy a great film.
