“28 Years Later” is the continuation in the zombie series “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later”. (Both are fantastic films in their genres. If you like zombie, post apocalyptic films you’re in for a treat). The story is a continuation of the zombie story that began in 2002 when the Rage Virus devastated humankind turning most people into zombies. The main character is Spike, played by Alfie Williams, who comes of age in a community in the Scottish Highlands which found an ingenious way to thrive in the zombie epidemic. Theirs is a nearly self sustaining community, on an island with a guarded gate. Members of this community leave to hunt, forage and show their children the dangers that lurk outside, like a right of passage ritual. The UK is one of the last areas to still have the virus and so is quarantined by the outside world and a very dangerous place.
Spike grows up in this safe community with a flawed father and a mother with an unknown illness. The symptoms of her illness do not reflect the symptoms of the Rage. She has moments of delirium, a loss of appetite, even to the point of not eating bacon which any zombie would have devoured, sweating and is bed ridden through the whole story. We eventually find out what afflicts her and it is not the Rage.
This is the story of a zombie epidemic that is winding down and a boy’s quest to try and save his ailing mother. One of the elements that make stories like this one great is the bravery of the protagonists. Spike sets out with his father from the island to the mainland where the danger is and encounters the different types of undead. Some are faster and more dangerous than others and they all crave human flesh. There is even a kind of alpha zombie that is truly fearsome.
I love a good zombie film because, if done right, they can encompass any genres. Whether you give them a scifi, action twist or make it into a comedy it can work. The idea of stepping outside of your door one day and everybody is mindless and wants to eat you is a terrifying thought. Society breaks down and all those relationships and services from society we take for granted suddenly disintegrates before our very eyes and we are left vulnerable and running for our lives. That is the gist of a good zombie movie.
This could be just the start of a very good series of zombie films. I hope they continue the series in different places, with different people handling the crisis in their own way. I have high hopes for future films in this series. So, start from the beginning and enjoy all three films.
