Cast Away
released 2000

”Cast Away” is an American adventure, drama, survivor-style film directed and produced by Robert Zemeckis. It was also produced by Tom Hanks, Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey and Robert Zemeckis. It stars Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt and Nick Searcy, Jennifer Lewis, Chris Noth, Vince Martin, Goeffrey Blake and Lari White. Tom Hanks was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 73rd Academy Awards for his performance as Chuck Nolan.

“Cast Away” is a survival style film you can say was inspired by Daniel Defoe´s “Robinson Crusoe”. In the story Chuck Nolan, played by Tom Hanks, is marooned on a deserted island in the South Pacific after his plane crashes. He is originally from Memphis, Tennessee and living a very busy life managing people at work and life with his love. This all changes when he is stranded alone on a desert island after his plane crashes.

He eventually learns to survive on the desert island and becomes adept at under water spear fishing and even talks to a volley-ball to keep his sanity. He names the volleyball Wilson and adopts it as his new friend. Chuck goes through a transformation while on the island. He becomes thinner, losses a tooth, grows a beard and wears a loin-cloth but he never loses sight of his goal to go home.

If I were to describe Chuck in one word I would have to use the word “determined”. He is not going to die on the island. This is no doubt due to his hard work ethic and his ability at problem solving. Like I´ve said before, this is the MacGyver TV series on steroids. This is the story about of a man´s hard work and determination channeled toward something so valuable we take it for granted in our everyday lives.

I highly recommend this as a must see and own.
