13 Sins
released 2014

”13 Sins” also known as “13: Game of Death” is an American, horror, action, comedy film directed by Daniel Stamm and written by David Birke and Daniel Stamm. It is a remake of the 2006 horror, comedy Thai film “13 Beloved”. The talented cast of actors include Ron Perlman, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Rutina Wesley, Tom Bower, George Coe, Mark Weber and Devon Graye. This is a low budget gem that premiered at the 2014 SXSW film festival before being released in the US. The music was by Michael Wandmacher.

“13 Sins” is the story of Elliot Brindle, played by Mark Weber, whose life comes crashing down on him when he loses his job. Without adequate income his handicapped brother could be sent back to an institution and his wife is pregnant. His father is an incredibly negative and selfish alcoholic and his brother cannot support himself. So many people rely on him and he is overwhelmed.

One day Elliot gets a phone call from an anonymous caller, played by George Coe, that promises a solution to his financial woes but ends up being a Faustian bargain. The caller promises Elliot a lot of money if he can accomplish 13 tasks. These tasks threaten to destroy everything Elliot cares about in his life as they become more and more dangerously criminal.

Add a pinch of conspiracy theory and disturbing Brindle family history as well as a few unpredictable character revelations. Temper that with a sweet girlfriend, played by Rutina Wesley, and you have a gem of a movie.

The questions we ask ourselves after watching this movie can take us to very dark places in our souls. What would we do if we were under extreme stress and the lives of our loved ones depended on us accepting these 13 challenges? How far would we go if a stranger offered us a lot of money to do terrible things and we believed there would be no societal accountability for our actions? These are serious questions because the decisions we make determines who we are. Elliot Brindle´s father is a good example of someone who refuses to acknowledge this.
